LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL was founded in 1917 in the United
States by businessman Melvin Jones who felt that successful
people like himself and his colleagues should devote some of the
energies which had enabled them to succeed in business to
serving their local communities. Appropriately he chose "We
Serve" as the Lions’ motto.
Lions Clubs now exist in more than 170
countries (including the newly democratic countries of Eastern
Europe and Russia) and more than 2.5 million men and women wear
the distinctive lapel pin.
The Lions Club of Jersey was formed in
November 1963, at the instigation of the Lions Clubs of
Southampton and St. Malo. Today, there are still eight members
of the Jersey Lions Club who were among the founders.
Like other similar service clubs the Jersey
Lions Club draws its membership from every profession and trade
and amongst its fifty members are bankers, retailers, growers,
pharmacists, electronics engineers, public
relations consultants, importers, doctors, architects and
accountants.
The Lions’ prime function is to serve its
community and the Jersey Lions Club has distinguished itself as
one of the most successful fund-raisers in its Multiple District
which encompasses Great Britain and Ireland.
